MISC:Benin, formerly Dahomey, has no natural harbors on its 75 mile
(121 Km.) coastline. Its climate is tropical; hot, humid in the south
and arid in the north. The terrain is mostly flat to undulating plains;
with some hills and mountains. 12% of the land is arable. 60% of the
labor force is engaged in agriculture. Organized labor represents about
75% of the wage earners. Recent droughts have severely affected marginal
agriculture in the north. Both males and females are liable for
military service. Benin became independent on 1 August, 1960. Member of
UN since 1960. (The accent is on the second syllable and the i is
pronounced as a long e.)
